Ebook About "The best book of the summer." -- InStyle"I LOVED this novel....If you have ever sung along to a hit on the radio, in any decade, then you will devour Mary Jane at 45 rpm." —Nick HornbyAlmost Famous meets Daisy Jones & The Six in this "delightful" (New York Times Book Review) novel about a fourteen-year-old girl’s coming of age in 1970s Baltimore, caught between her straight-laced family and the progressive family she nannies for—who happen to be secretly hiding a famous rock star and his movie star wife for the summer. In 1970s Baltimore, fourteen-year-old Mary Jane loves cooking with her mother, singing in her church choir, and enjoying her family’s subscription to the Broadway Showtunes of the Month record club. Shy, quiet, and bookish, she’s glad when she lands a summer job as a nanny for the daughter of a local doctor. A respectable job, Mary Jane’s mother says. In a respectable house. The house may look respectable on the outside, but inside it’s a literal and figurative mess: clutter on every surface, Impeachment: Now More Than Ever bumper stickers on the doors, cereal and takeout for dinner. And even more troublesome (were Mary Jane’s mother to know, which she does not): the doctor is a psychiatrist who has cleared his summer for one important job—helping a famous rock star dry out. A week after Mary Jane starts, the rock star and his movie star wife move in.Over the course of the summer, Mary Jane introduces her new household to crisply ironed clothes and a family dinner schedule, and has a front-row seat to a liberal world of sex, drugs, and rock and roll (not to mention group therapy). Caught between the lifestyle she’s always known and the future she’s only just realized is possible, Mary Jane will arrive at September with a new idea about what she wants out of life, and what kind of person she’s going to be.Book Mary Jane: A Novel Review :
This is a little gem of a book. Don't pay attention to anyone who claims it is profane or doesn't seem to understand it is a work of fiction. Some people should stick to reading the Bible. Any rational adult can handle the few sexual references and mild profanity. A lovely little story. This is a super strict household. Her mother is rigid. Her father doesn’t give her the time of day. The house is run like a good old-fashioned tight ship. It’s the 70s and traditional family values and proper manners are being threatened by the dawning of the Me Generation. It’s raining self-help books and feelings are gauged by mood rings.Mary Jane is obedient, shadowing her mother as she cooks in the kitchen, attending church alongside her, belting out show tunes together, and tending to household chores, all of which are what her mom deems essential life skills for a young lady to have. But Mary Jane is only fourteen. Shouldn’t she be embracing her youth – hanging out with friends, having a little fun?Wait for it. When Mary Jane gets a job nannying for her neighbors, the good times begin. What Mary Jane sees at the Cone’s house and what her mom thinks is going on are two different views. Mary Jane isn’t shocked, it’s more like awe. At this house, it’s terribly messy, there is never a homecooked meal, and it is pretty much general chaos, she is immediately smitten. With all of them. They show each other affection. They aren’t dominated by rules. And a famous rock star and his equally fabulous wife are coming to spend the summer with them, but it must remain a secret. What Mary Jane’s mother doesn’t know won’t hurt her. What Mary Jane doesn’t tell her, well, this is a first.Mary Jane’s eyes are opened to an alternative lifestyle while simultaneously and unbeknownst to her, she is exposing her new employers to a whole new world as well.I enjoyed getting to know Mary Jane and watching her relationship with her young charge grow. MARY JANE is a coming-into-her-own story about a young girl who really sees her parents for the first time, gains the confidence to form her own opinions, and while there are some heavy topics, Blau handles them skillfully.
